Willows beside the palace wall, fill the city with a tinge of spring.

Whisperings is Li Wei’s first solo exhibition in Beirut. The Galerie Alice Mogabgab is please to present a group of fourteen recent paintings, produced between 2015 and 2016.
« […] Li Wei proposes today an absolutely unprecedented reinterpretation of this (Chinese) pictorial tradition. Not seeking to merely quote it, she continues on the contrary her research into new creative processes and implementations, maintaining the quality of these processes as delicate and poetic openings of the gaze through three types of chromatically distinct categories: ink drawings, red paintings and green paintings», writes Michel Baudson in his text for the exhibition catalogue.
Li Wei, born 1979 in Harbin, in the Hei Longjiang Province in China, lives and works between Hong Kong and Beijing.
In 1999 Li Wei finished her studies at the China National Academy of Fine Art in Hangzhou. In 2003 she graduated from the painting program at the Arts Institute Nanjing, and in 2007 she obtained her Masters in Mural Painting from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. On the occasion of her degree show, she received the Academy’s First Prize for painting.
Li Wei’s two first solo exhibitions took place in 2009, at the Today Art Museum in Beijing, and at the Central Art Museum in Nantong. Both shows, entitled Simplicity and Complexity, presented works on paper and silk from different years. Since, the artist’s work has been exhibited regularly in Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai as well as in numerous group exhibitions in China, Australia and USA.
In 2011, Li Wei was invited by Michel Baudson to participate in the exhibition, From Trees to Forest (De l’arbre à la forêt) at the Galerie Alice Mogabgab, where her paintings were met with great success. Thereafter, the gallery has shown her work on an almost yearly basis, in Beirut and in Paris, in 2012, 2013, 12014 and 2016.
Michel Baudson is honorary president of the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts – Ecole supérieure des Arts in Brussels; honorary president of the Association belge des critiques d’art; president of Jeunesse et Arts plastiques; member of the Commission consultative des arts plastiques de la Communauté française de Belgique; visiting professor at the Academy of Fine Art in Xi’An (Shaanxi, China); member of the AICA (International Association of Art Critics) and of the Icom (International Commission of Museums); he is the curator of international exhibitions and the author of numerous publications.
